Custom Birthday Candles

Customize any number candle with any theme! EveryMomDay.com
Like many parents, we tend to host themed parties for the kids.  I have done common themes like Sesame Street, or some more unique/personalized themes like hot pink & zebra gymnastics!  A couple of years ago I was inspired by a photo I saw, probably on Pinterest or Etsy, where a simple number candle was customized for the party theme.  Sure, you can buy themed candles (if you pick a common theme), but they are typically generic – and not age specific.  With this tutorial you will see how fun and easy it is to make your own candle for your next upcoming party!

What you need:

  • A number candle – to correspond with the age of your child.
  • A sharp knife
  • Puffy Paint – in whatever colors you need for your theme
  • Sharpie (optional)
  • Glitter/Rhinestones (optional)
Customize any number candle with any theme! EveryMomDay.com

What you need to do:

  1. Take the sharp knife and carefully scrape off the colored border/decoration on the candle.  You will be applying paint over the number, but I still prefer to scrape off the color it came with, so that I don’t have to be as nervous about missing an edge.                               Customize any number candle with any theme! 2. Begin working on your design.  This can be as basic or intricate as you desire.  I typically start with the outline and then fill it in.  You can use the tip of the puffy paint or a toothpick to help ensure that the paint fills all of the little nooks and crannies.  If you want to add glitter or rhinestones, do that while the paint is fresh/wet – so that it will dry and adhere the glitter/rhinestones to the candle.Customize any number candle with any theme! EveryMomDay.com
  3. You will need to allow your candle to dry between colors/layers.  I typically can do the outline and base color in one go – let it set overnight – then resume decorating in the morning.
  4. Sharpies are great for adding small details like the webs on this Spiderman candle.  Other designs may be just as easy to do with paint alone.                                                     Customize any number candle with any theme! EveryMomDay.com

Everyone will love your custom birthday candle! #DIY #EveryMomDay Click To Tweet

I only recommend this for birthday candles that will be burning a short time.  When we burn our candles for birthdays, they are only lit a short time (to sing) and don’t burn down the number at all – just the wick and maybe a little wax off the top.  I do not have any knowledge on how the paint would burn if you left the candle to burn all the way – so please use discretion.

Baby’s “Zero” Birthday

A fun celebration and tradition for welcoming a new baby with older siblings! EveryMomDay.com

One of my favorite traditions with my children is celebrating their “zero” birthday in the hospital.  The baby may be oblivious to the celebration – but older siblings have an incredible amount of fun with this welcome party!  I got the inspiration for this from Pinterest and put my own spin on it.

While perusing Pinterest I saw an adorable pic of a newborn and a cupcake with a zero candle – and I wanted that photo!  Weeks before baby was due, I went to the bakery and found the perfect cupcake, which I placed in the freezer.  When I packed my hospital bag, I also had a checklist of the last minute things that would need to be grabbed, like phone chargers and my cupcake!  Then I bought a zero birthday candle and used some puffy paint and glitter to dazzle it up a bit (tutorial is coming soon!).  The candle went into my hospital bag.  That was the end of the Pinterest idea… but not for me.

I have also read about giving sibling gifts to the big brothers/sisters, and so I decided I would not just have a cute cupcake for a photo-op, I would have a BIRTHDAY PARTY!  “The baby” brought her big sisters 3 gifts each: a movie, a game, and an activity book – all things that they could use and enjoy while visiting their new baby at the hospital, so they would not get bored!  And we let each girl pick out two gifts to bring the baby, too.  It took a little extra prepping, but not much!  We kept the gifts in a black garbage bag in the car – so the kids would not see them, and Dad ran out to the car after baby was born and before visitors arrived, to set up for the “party!”

It made the day extra special for the kids.  They got a new baby, and we celebrated with a party where everyone got to open presents and enjoy cake.  The kids loved it, and I loved watching them enjoy it.  It’s a tradition we enjoyed with baby number 4 as well – and now that we are done having children myself, I hope to share the idea with other mommy’s to be!

My kids love being read to – and they love when they have fun activities to accompany the story! This week I brought an idea to life that I remember seeing a long time ago. This activity accompanies the book There Was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly by Lucille Colandro. Colandro has an entire series of children’s books themed around “There was an old Lady who Swallowed a (fill in the blank)” and this activity will work for every book!

This read-along activity is low-cost and provides endless opportunities for learning and fun! Click To Tweet

What you need

You may not have an empty syrup bottle lying around – but, that is what makes this activity so cute!
Better add Mrs. Butter-worth syrup & lots of waffles to the grocery list! #EveryMomDay Click To Tweet

What you need to do

Assemble your words. You will want to create a word for each item the old lady swallows. My book had the list on the back of the book (which made it easy!). How you do this may depend on the age of your children. You could have an older child sound the animals out and spell them by stringing the beads on the pipe cleaners. A preschool child can look for the letters you tell her to find and help string them. A toddler could string the beads you provide them or you could create them yourself!  After stringing your beads on, twist at the end and cut off the excess pipe cleaner with scissors.

Read & Enjoy. When your words are all made it’s time to read and enjoy! Give your child(ren) the “Old Woman” (aka the Mrs. Butter-worth syrup container) and begin to read the book. Each time the old woman swallows an item, have your child drop that word into the woman’s belly! Adjust the activity for your child’s skills and abilities. Whether they are looking for the word themselves, sounding out the first letter, identifying colors (we used a different color for each word) or dropping the word you provide them.

What it teaches

  • Fine motor skills. Kids will work on their fine motor skills as they assemble the words, stringing the letter beads onto the pipe cleaners. They will also work on similar skills as they pick up each word and drop them into the Old Lady’s belly!
  • Taking turns. Kids will practice patience when participating in a group setting. Even 1:1, children will practice patience and turn taking between reading/listening and dropping the word into the bottle.
  • Listening. This activity requires kids to pay close attention to which object is being swallowed, encouraging active listening skills.
  • Letter/word recognition. Based on your child’s age and development, they will work on letter/sound/word recognition.

What else you can do

  • Use a unique color for each word to work on color recognition
  • Count the letters in each word
  • Count the beads on each strip (if you used extra beads like I did)
  • Make a unique set of words for multiple kids and pass the bottle around
  • Make a unique set of words for each book in the series
  • Create your own silly things for the Old Woman to swallow!
  • Let the kids play with the leftover supplies! My 2 year old enjoyed stringing random letters on and off of pipe cleaners, whereas my 5 year old liked creating the alphabet (and her name) on her pipe cleaner. My 8 year old enjoyed creating silly/random words and phrases. My 5 year old also enjoyed creating her name by shaping 1-2 pipe cleaners into each letter of her name.

I have started a new habit.  I wake up 15 minutes before the rest of the house so that I can brew a cup of coffee and start my day with some “me” time.  99% of my day is spent taking care of others (my kids, clients, husband, etc.) and I have learned that before I can take care of anyone else, I need to take care of myself. Sometimes I enjoy just sitting outside and reflecting, and other times I completing a relaxing task like coloring in my adult coloring books.  Either way, I always have my cup of coffee.

DIY Edible Birthday Cake Image

Any Birthday Theme is a DIY with this amazing cake decorating tutorial from EveryMomDay.com

This year my daughter came to me and asked for a Glitter Force theme for her Birthday Party. This left me with limited options, since the Netflix Original is not “mainstream” (yet) in the United States, so I could not simply walk into a bakery and request a cake made from the design book.

Pinterest to the rescue! I had pinned a tutorial a long time ago on how to create just about any image on a cake easily – made entirely of frosting. I was hopeful but skeptical – and I must say I was pleased with the results, though there are a few things I will do differently next time.

Easily recreate any image, entirely of frosting, to decorate birthday cakes! #EveryMomDay Click To Tweet

What you will need:

  • A coloring book page of the image you’d like
  • A piece of glass out of a picture frame
  • Wax Paper
  • Frosting
  • Piping supplies (bags and decorating tips) or ziplock baggies
  • Tape

What you need to do:

STEP 1: Select the image. You will want to search for a coloring book page (I did that on the internet) and print it in “mirror image” if there is any writing or logos on the image. Consider the size of your cake and the size of image you’d like. You can always resize the image when printing if necessary.  If it’s an actual coloring book page you can resize and mirror-image with a copy machine as well.

STEP 2: Assemble your work space. Tape the coloring book page to the glass with the image facing the glass. Tape wax paper on the other side of the glass. You will have a “sandwich” with the glass in between the coloring book page and the wax paper.

Any Birthday Theme is a DIY with this amazing cake decorating tutorial from EveryMomDay.com

STEP 3: Outline. Begin with black frosting.  You can find black food coloring at most craft stores in the baking aisle, and add it to your store bought or homemade frosting. I prefer THIS recipe for homemade frosting over any other options!  You could use decorating bags and tips, or put the frosting in a ziplock bag and cut a small piece out of the corner – both options will work, though for the outline you will want a very small opening.  The tip I used is the Wilton Decorating Tip, No.3 Round, though I do think I will buy the Wilton #1 Round Decorating Tip for next time!  Carefully trace the black outlines from the coloring sheet onto your wax paper, and fill in any large areas that will be black. When you are done, put the entire thing in the freezer for an hour or so, so that it can firm up and you can move on to your other colors.

Any Birthday Theme is a DIY with this amazing cake decorating tutorial from EveryMomDay.com

STEP 4: Color it in. One color at a time, fill in the coloring page you created with frosting. Because you are working from the back of the image, it is okay if you overlap the colors you already used, but ensure that you do not get any frosting on any empty spaces that still need color.  I used zip lock bags for this part of the process since I did not need as precise of a line.  When the image is complete, place it in the freezer overnight.

Any Birthday Theme is a DIY with this amazing cake decorating tutorial from EveryMomDay.com

STEP 5: Prepare your cake. You could cheat a bit and order a cake from any bakery, requesting that it not be decorated, or do what I did and make your favorite from a store bought mix, or from scratch.  We make the cake the same night we prepare the image so that it can cool completely overnight.  You will want your cake frosting to be as cool as possible (we refrigerate the frosted cake overnight), and your image should be frozen. Carefully remove the wax paper from the glass and trim the wax paper if you have a lot of excess – this just makes it easier to handle. Flip your frosting image upside down onto the cake – make sure you know where you want it – it is not repositionable! Slowly peel off the wax paper, I started in a corner, but that may not be necessary.  If your image does not begin to transfer well, put the entire cake in the freezer for 30 minutes and then try again.

STEP 6: Voila! You have created your own edible image made completely of frosting! Now, add your message and you’re ready to impress your family and friends!
